The tradition of piñatas in posadas

by clinik-shop Admin on February 27, 2019

Piñatas are an important part of children's parties and in this posada season they are one of the essential elements for children and adults.

The origin of the piñatas is Chinese and according to tradition they were filled with different seeds in order to wait for a good harvest.

It was not until the 13th century when this object was introduced to Italy during Marco Polo's travels and was called “pignatta”. Over the years it was adopted in almost the entire European continent and little by little it took on a religious meaning.

At the time of the conquest, the Spanish brought this tradition to what is now our country and used it as a tool to evangelize, representing with it a symbology of good and evil. The idea was to line the clay pot with bright colors that represented temptations and they added seven spikes that symbolize the capital sins and the person who was blindfolded to hit the piñata symbolized blind faith.

Currently, piñatas are made of cardboard and are filled with sweets and other goodies, and are still popular with children and adults alike.
